Radiotherapist - UK
 

BJUSBM/COL/061108 -- : An experienced Radiotherapist is sought to join an expert team responsible for planning and delivering high quality Radiotherapy treatment to cancer patients. The successful candidate will be a progressive individual with a keen interest in both the technical and patient care elements of the job. The department is purpose built with Varian equipment comprising four linacs, CT-sim, Acuity, HDR and Gulmay. The hospital takes the development of its staff very seriously and role extension is actively practiced with 75% of the department's review clinics undertaken by Senior Radiographers and all dosimetry planning.


Responsibilities:
• To supervise and deliver with a high level of skill and accuracy, radiotherapy treatments using external beam radiation and/or sealed sources.
• To supervise and undertake the planning and verification of patients’ treatments, alongside clinicians and other team members.
• To supervise and be actively involved in the pre/post planning processes, including treatment course scheduling, calculations for treatment dose and programming of the treatment plan using computer systems.
• To supervise and actively undertake QA procedures within the department, including:
o Responsibility for preparation of radiotherapy treatment and planning machines, for daily clinical use
o Invivo dosimetry - monitoring daily radiation dose to the patient
o Treatment image review, including on-line corrections
o Fault Reporting
o Reporting of changes required to QA process
• To provide patients and carers with verbal and written advice specific to their needs.
• To take responsibility for the safe and accurate use of expensive and highly complex Radiotherapy equipment.
• Assess the patients’ holistic needs ensuring their suitability for radiotherapy planning or treatment, giving the appropriate advice and communicating with other members of the multi-disciplinary team if necessary.
• To ensure that accurate statistics and records are maintained, in line with the policies of the Department.
• To take responsibility for the organisation of the day to day running of the unit, including, but not limited to, the participation and development of Quality Assurance Procedures and statistical data collection.
• To communicate and co-ordinate with the multi-disciplinary team involved in the patients’ cancer journey.
• To deputise, where necessary for the Radiographer Manager.
• To liaise with all other Departments concerned with the patients’ management.
• To participate in further education in line with the requirements of the Health Professions Council through CPD.
• To provide clinical education and supervision to:
o Undergraduate students on placement in the department, including mentor supervision
o Radiographers and Assistant Radiographers
o Other Health Care Professions involved in cancer care
• To maintain good working relationships with other members of staff, both internally and externally.
• To read and comply with Local Rules; Code of Practice; Local Health and Safety; IRMER and COSHH.
• Update the Patient Administration System (PAS) in line with the policies on real-time data collection and confidentiality. To update the Varis system when required.
• To be responsible for the completion of relevant QA procedures including Portal Image review, TLD and diode dosimetry.
• To prepare and update documentation in accordance with ISO 9000 requirements.
• Regularly required to manually assist patients.
• To act as Internal Quality Assurance Auditor if appropriate training received.
• Preparation of questions with reference to department documents, liaising with all staff groups, carrying out audits and the completion of all applicable documentation.
• To be responsible for checking treatment summaries and annotating them on the notes system.
• To be responsible for recording treatments on the HRG database

Requirements:

• Diploma of the College of Radiographers (Therapy) or BSc (Hons) Degree in Oncology and Radiotherapy Technology or equivalent degree.
• Registered with Health Professions Council UK.
• H.D.C.R. (T) or M.Sc. whilst not essential, is desirable.
• Ideally have at least four years of postgraduate clinical experience.
