BJUSMBA/COL/121208/01 -- An experienced Cardiac Technician is sought to work as a member of the team of specialized Cardiac Physiologists and Cardiographers performing diagnostic tests and providing technical assistance to the senior physiologists during invasive and non-invasive procedures. The post holder will be expected to provide educational and technical support for other trainees and cardiographers. Senior Cardiac Physiologists participate in a wide variety of tasks from basic diagnostic investigations to complex invasive therapeutic procedures. They are involved in a high degree of patient contact and often involved in working with other disciplines (Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses, and Radiographers etc) in a theatre environment.
Responsibilities:
• To maintain discipline and standards of technical competency in the provision of invasive and non-invasive investigative services within the department, in accordance to national and local guidelines.
• To perform and supervise the recording of electrocardiograms for both adult and paediatric patients. This may include the notification to medical staff of any medically urgent results.
• To fit 24 hour ambulatory Holter monitoring. This will include the explanation of the use and care of the equipment to the patients, and dealing with any queries that this may raise.
• The analysis of Holter recordings and the reporting of any results that may require urgent medical review.
• To fit and analyse blood pressure monitors, this includes the reporting of urgent results to medical teams as appropriate.
• To be the supervising cardiac physiologist for running exercise stress tests. The physiologist would take the lead role in the provision of the exercise tests, strictly in accordance to departmental and national guidelines. This would include the preparation, and the explanation of the procedure to the patients.
• The practitioner is also expected to obtain relevant clinical information from the patient to ensure that the procedure is safe and relevant.
• The practitioner is expected to be able to offer reassurance and be able to respond to the patients concerns and queries as appropriate.
• The practitioner would be expected to deal with any outcome during or after the test, this could include resuscitation or seeking expert medical help in the presence of any other life threatening event.
• To provide technical support during routine cardiac catheterization. This would include performing left and right heart catheters, performing blood gas analysis, being responsible for the technical set up of the case to include the check of the results trolley, assisting with resuscitation and with the set up and maintenance of IABP as required.
• To provide assistance in the angiography suite during temporary pacing as required.
• To provide a cardiac physiologist led pacemaker clinic, this may include the reprogramming of device therapy, counselling of patients and planning with patient follow up.
• To assist with the provision of echocardiography (this may be under supervision until competency has been achieved).
• Responsibility for the patient during and whilst in the department, this may include pushing and wheeling around of wheelchairs, oxygen cylinders and beds.
• Reporting of echo findings for verification from a higher grade as needed.
• Assisting with the provision of respiratory testing.
• To keep abreast of new developments in products and techniques within interventional and diagnostic Cardiology, this should include the review of one journal article per month.
• To be involved in the support of research techniques and projects where appropriate.
• To maintain Departmental statistical records and assist with audits where required to improve the quality of services.
• To ensure that all cardiological database information is recorded and entered appropriately.
• To keep all patient information systems updated, this would include PAS, PRISM, MUSE and any other cardiological database as required.
• To participate in the training of junior staff and other disciplines as and when required.
• To assist staff in the continuing development of in-house training.
• To maintain effective stock control as designated and be aware of the economical use of supplies.
• To maintain a high standard of care and discipline within the Department.
• To participate in the on-call service for the angiography suite.
• Accept responsibility for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff.
• Assist in the development of new ideas/methods and encourage colleagues and other staff to do likewise.
Requirements:
• B. Sc. Clinical Science, H.Tec. MPPM or equivalent.
• BLS certification
• Strong experience in the Cath. lab OR in Echocardiography essential.
