Specialist Clinical Technologist, Nuclear Medicine
 

BJUSBM/COL/161208/03 -- A highly experienced nuclear medicine technologist is sought to join this hospital outside of London. This organisation provides a range of specialist Clinical-Scientific services, which include Clinical-Diagnostics (Bone Densitometry, Clinical Measurement and Nuclear Medicine), Radiotherapy Physics, Clinical Engineering, and Radiation Protection. The services are staffed by multidisciplinary teams, which comprise of clinical scientists, technologists, nurses and medical secretaries.
The Nuclear Medicine service is an ISO9001 accredited clinical-scientific service using unsealed radioactive pharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Its functions include reporting and interpretation of diagnostic results from the investigation of a wide range of clinical conditions, advising medical staff on the appropriate investigation of patients, ensuring patients are investigated and treated in a safe and accurate manner and evaluation, selection and acceptance testing of new medical equipment.
The successful candidate will join a highly experienced and friendly team and carry out a wide range of duties involved in the provision of the routine service as well as other more complex imaging. This will require their work to meet high standards of safety and accountability to comply with relevant legislation.


Responsibilities:

• Carry out routine and some more complex diagnostic Nuclear Medicine investigations on patients in a safe manner using complex imaging equipment in accordance with departmental protocols.
• Carry out routine and complex laboratory techniques.
• Carry out complex in-vitro blood labelling investigations.
• Prepare pharmaceuticals labelled with radioactivity within isolators and under aseptic conditions for intravenous administration to patients, and perform complex in- vitro blood labelling investigations.
• Able to perform venepuncture to administer radioactive substances whilst working under safe practices, and by oral and inhalation methods also.
• Administer Radioiodine therapy to patients.
• Provide routine advice to patients undergoing administration of radioactive materials as well as to staff or relatives providing care to such patients, to ensure the risks of exposure to ionising radiation are understood by the concerned parties.
• Undertake departmental surveys or service audits as necessary and disseminate outcomes within the nuclear medicine group.
• Participate in clinical-scientific research projects as required and assist in carrying out clinical-scientific audit within the service.
• Ensure all patient- and investigative-data is entered accurately and stored correctly in hard copy and/or robust electronic filing systems.
• Participate in regular meetings with Nuclear Medicine service leads (technical and scientific), Clinical Service Manager and fellow staff.
• In the absence of more senior staff, must be able to prioritise own workload in accordance with service demands.
• Maintain an up to date knowledge of scientific and technical developments within this specialist field and their related applications in medicine.

Requirements:

• BTEC in MPPM, DCR, or Degree in relevant subject.
• Broad knowledge of routine and more complex Nuclear Medicine imaging techniques.
• Good knowledge of patient and staff risks arising from the use of ionising radiation.
• Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to use decay equations and mathematical skills to calculate radioactive doses for patients.
• Ability to participate in the safe preparation of a range of radiopharmaceutical products.
• Ability to dispense radioactive injections under aseptic conditions.
